Back at SecuraCorp, Blake slammed his office door closed and narrowed his eyes at the kid sitting in the chair. “Okay, asshole. You’ve got exactly five seconds to tell me who paid you to hack into our network and steal our confidential files.”
The guy looked down at his hands and then up at Blake. He shrugged. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Blake picked up the aged brown wallet on his desk and searched the contents. He pulled out a driver’s license and held it up. “Jake Michael Robson, you’re going to do some pretty serious federal time for stealing FBI documents. Minimum fifteen years. Four.”
His eyes widened and his mouth dropped open. “Fifteen years?”
“Naw. Maybe twenty. You’ll be what—forty-four when you get out? Three.”
“Okay. Okay.” The kid shook his head. “A friend of mine is doing time for robbery. A couple months ago I visited him. He said he knew a guy inside who needed a special job done using my particular skill set. Paid five thousand dollars cash. He said all I needed to do was hack into a computer and threaten to post some personal stuff. That’s it.”
“Which prison is your ‘friend’ doing time in?” Blake had a feeling he already knew.
“Ely State.”
Blake balled his fists. Ely State Prison. Nathan Shaw’s home until he was supposed to be transferred to death row at Nevada State Prison in Carson City.
“So you weren’t going to send the files to the newspapers or post them online?”
The kid scratched the side of his head. “Nope. That wasn’t what I was paid for. After reading some of the files, no way was I releasing anything. Not my style. I was paid to hack and threaten. Nothing more.”
“Well aren’t you just Mr. Noble.” Blake was relieved to know the confidential information from their network computer wasn’t going anywhere and the agents involved would be safe. “Did anyone mention why they wanted the job done?”
“Something about keeping you busy. Have no idea why.”
Blake did. Every muscle in his body tightened. He wanted to throttle the kid and it took all his willpower not to.
They wanted to keep Blake distracted because the time wasted working on figuring out who was behind the blackmail attempt and going to the ‘so called’ drop gave Cortez time to get Whitney out of the country undetected because they knew Blake would take the time protect the agents involved. Now Whitney and her kidnapper had a good day’s head start.
The plan had worked.
